• Question: How has the Corona Virus been affecting your job lately? Do have to work from home and if so do you enjoy it?

      My research is computer based, so I can do that from home. But I am also a science communicator and all of my public engagement work has been cancelled 🙁 of course.

      I also do a little bit of teaching, here and there, and I am able to do some of that on line – but it isn’t as enjoyable as working with real people!

    My labs are closed so I’m working from home. This means lots of reading and writing, and analysing old data to try and learn new things. I’m looking forward to labs opening so I can do some experiments again!
    Sometimes I get bored and spend too long looking out the window at my neighbour’s cat in the garden.

    My research work is lab based and the lab has now been closed for a bit over two weeks. We tried to do as much as we could in the lead up to the closure- do the most urgent experiments, freeze down samples in preparation for when we reopen, etc. It was stressful and the priority was for the final year undergraduate students to complete the work they need to do in the lab so that they can concentrate on data analysis and writing up their project thesis. This is a big part of their final year and we did all we could to enable this to conclude in a satisfactory manner. The other part of my job is teaching, so I have been supporting students online through video conferencing and collaborating on documents online. I have also been “meeting” online with my colleagues so that we can write up and report our findings, and to plan ahead for teaching and research.
