There are different types of coronavirus, some are not very dangerous and just cause a cold.
The coronavirus which is infecting thousands of people right now is called SARS-CoV-2, and the disease that the virus causes is called COVID-19.
The reason why this virus is so dangerous is because it is very contagious, and can cause lung infections and breathing difficulties. Since it is infecting so many people at the same time, hospitals are close to running out of beds.
Staying indoors will help to slow the spread of the virus.
I think that COVID-19 is the biggest challenge of the decade by far. Of course, the worst part is that people are dying of this disease. But it will affect us all even if we don’t become infected, because we need to stop our normal way of life to slow its spread. Stopping work, going to school, massive events such as the olympics. The knock on effects on the economy are going to last a long time.
The silver lining is that it the world will hopefully be better prepared to respond to any pandemic like this in the future. Another hope is that healthcare systems and disease research will get better funding as a result of this crisis. This tough time is also bringing communities closer together.

I think it’s scary and isolating. But I also think it’s showing us beauty in a very strange way. I’m spending more time with my son and in my garden and nature is able to re-wild. I can appreciate life in the slow lane and I’m grateful for that opportunity. It’s hard to balance that with knowing so many people are poorly though and I don’t take that lightly.
